Counterfeit Gold Coins: How to Spot Fakes Before You Buy

Counterfeit gold coins and bars are a real risk on the secondary market, and the piece that fools people the most is not a cheap plated fake. It is a well-made coin that weighs almost right, looks almost right, and settles under the ping of a fingernail almost right.

What actually gets counterfeited

The most heavily counterfeited items are the ones with the highest secondary-market liquidity. That means the popular sovereign bullion coins first: American Gold Eagle, American Gold Buffalo, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, South African Krugerrand, Austrian Philharmonic, and the British Sovereign in older-history pieces.

Bar counterfeits split into two families. The first is the plated brass or tungsten bar with a thin gold shell, sold at prices near real bullion in shady channels. The second is more sophisticated: a tungsten core wrapped in a genuine gold jacket, produced because tungsten has almost exactly the density of gold.

Tungsten measures 19.25 grams per cubic centimeter. Gold measures 19.32. That gap is small enough that a well-built tungsten-core bar can pass a scale test, a caliper test, and even a shallow surface scan without raising a flag. Coins are harder to fake because their design tolerances are tight and their edge reeding is difficult to replicate. Bars are easier because they are simpler shapes with fewer forensic features. That is why many experienced buyers stay with coins from named national mints.

The four home tests, and where each one stops

1. Weight to the tenth of a gram

A jeweller’s scale that reads to 0.01 gram is a fifteen-dollar tool. Every real bullion coin has a published gross weight from its issuing mint. A one-ounce American Gold Eagle weighs 33.931 grams because it is a 22-karat alloy. A one-ounce American Gold Buffalo weighs 31.108 grams because it is fine gold.

What the weight test catches is any base-metal fake that is not built around tungsten. Lead, brass, copper, and steel all have densities that miss the mark by enough to show on the scale. What the weight test does not catch is a tungsten-core piece machined to the correct mass.

2. Diameter and thickness with a caliper

A digital caliper reads to a hundredth of a millimeter. Mint specifications for popular bullion coins are exact, and a good fake still has to satisfy the visible mould before it satisfies the scale. Slight overshoot on either dimension is a strong tell.

The limit is the same one the scale runs into. A counterfeiter with a lathe and enough patience can hit the geometry within tolerance. Combined with the weight, the caliper narrows the possibilities, but it does not eliminate a professionally built tungsten piece.

3. Magnet slide

Gold is diamagnetic, which means it is very slightly repelled by a strong magnet rather than attracted. A neodymium magnet held above a real gold coin will not stick, and if the coin is slid down a tilted magnet, it drifts down slowly instead of accelerating.

Any iron, nickel, or steel core will fail the magnet test immediately. Tungsten will not, because tungsten is also weakly diamagnetic. The magnet catches the crude fakes and clears the honest ones, but it is silent on the fakes that most reward a counterfeiter.

4. The ping test

Balanced on a fingertip and struck with another coin, a fine gold coin rings with a long, high, bell-like tone. Plated brass or steel fakes produce a duller, shorter sound. Free smartphone apps can record the tone and compare its dominant frequency against a reference for that specific coin.

The ping is atmospheric evidence, not proof. Temperature, how the coin is balanced, and the striker all shift the tone slightly. A tungsten-core coin can still ring at a plausible pitch. Treat the ping as one data point in a stack, never as the whole answer.

Reference specifications for the two most common US bullion coins

The numbers below are from the United States Mint’s published product specifications for its bullion program. Any deviation from these figures on a piece marketed as one of them is a hard signal to stop and verify.

The Eagle is heavier than the Buffalo because its alloy makes it slightly larger by volume for the same one troy ounce of pure gold. That is why a Buffalo and an Eagle at the same diameter cannot share the same weight. Any coin marketed as one but matching the other’s mass is off.

The professional tools that actually settle it

Sigma-type electromagnetic verifiers

Handheld conductivity testers, most commonly the Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier family, pass a low-frequency electromagnetic field through the coin or bar and read its electrical conductivity signature. Gold has a distinct conductivity that tungsten does not share, even inside a plated jacket. Tungsten cores register outside the gold band.

These devices sell in the low four figures and are the practical answer for a private buyer who plans to purchase serious quantities on the secondary market. They are also the tool most legitimate dealers use at the intake counter.

Dealer XRF spectrometry

X-ray fluorescence analysers fire an X-ray at the metal and read the emission spectrum to identify the composition. Most reputable coin and bullion dealers keep one on the premises. XRF is fast, non-destructive, and reliable for surface composition.

Its limit is depth. A basic XRF reads only the first few micrometers of the surface, which means a tungsten-core bar with a thick gold jacket can pass. Dealers who handle large bars pair XRF with ultrasonic thickness testing or specific-gravity checks to close that gap.

Grading services and sealed slabs

Third-party grading services such as NGC and PCGS authenticate a coin and seal it in a tamper-evident holder with a serial number that can be looked up on the grader’s database. Buying an already-slabbed coin from a reputable seller is one of the cleanest ways for a private buyer to remove counterfeit risk.

Slabs are not perfect. Counterfeit slabs exist, imitating the housing and holograms of real ones. The safeguard is to verify the serial number on the grading service’s official website before payment. If the number does not resolve, the slab is fake, regardless of how convincing the plastic looks.

Where fakes circulate most

Two channels concentrate almost all reported counterfeit incidents for retail buyers. The first is peer-to-peer online marketplaces where private sellers list coins with no professional inventory chain behind them. The second is any offer priced meaningfully below the current spot price for the metal plus a normal premium.

The pricing signal is worth repeating. A one-ounce American Gold Eagle will not trade below spot from a private seller in a normal market. When it does, the deal is not a deal. Either the piece is counterfeit or the seller is running a payment fraud that the coin will never actually clear.

Why the IRA route removes this risk

A self-directed gold IRA does not let the account holder buy metal on a peer-to-peer marketplace and mail it to their home. The mechanics are the opposite. The custodian wires funds to a vetted dealer, the dealer ships the metal to an IRS-approved depository, and the depository logs it into the account under a chain of custody the custodian must document.

A practical order of operations for a private buyer

  1. Buy from an established dealer with a physical address and a documented return policy. If that is not possible, take the piece to one for verification before payment clears.
  2. Weigh the piece to the tenth of a gram and compare against the mint’s published gross weight for that exact coin or bar.
  3. Measure diameter and thickness with a digital caliper. Any overshoot is a stop signal.
  4. Slide the piece past a strong neodymium magnet. Any pull, jump, or slowed drift beyond mild diamagnetism is a stop signal.
  5. Balance and strike for the ping. Record and compare against a known reference tone.
  6. If any single test flags the piece, or if the price sits below spot, escalate to a Sigma-type verifier or a dealer XRF before payment.
  7. For slabbed coins, verify the serial number on the grader’s official database before accepting the piece.

Can a bank verify a gold coin for me?

Retail banks in the United States generally do not authenticate bullion coins. That work sits with coin dealers, bullion houses, and third-party grading services. A local branch teller has neither the tools nor the training to confirm a gold coin’s composition.

Does an acid test damage a real gold coin?
